The Blends Book

The Blends Book is aimed at those children who already have confidence with initial sounds. Each of the consonant blends featured is accompanied by a creative activity and two fun reading activities designed both to consolidate blend recognition and use and to extend children’s knowledge in a stimulating way.

The activities can be used in these ways:

• As an addition to a “letter of the week” programme
• During a weekly reading programme to focus on particular blends
• To target specific needs
• As maintenance tasks for homework

Activities are hands-on and will support children with different learning styles to absorb the look and sound of each blend. They will also assist with fine motor skills development like cutting, pasting, folding, colouring. Each activity leads to a finished product that supports further discussion about the featured blend.
